Holiday Advertising

Store flyer, Islesboro, ca. 1890

Did you survive Black Friday? Love it or hate it, the official first shopping day of the holiday season has increased in prominence over the years. Many stores now open in the wee hours of the morning after Thanksgiving Day (and some on Thanksgiving night) to entice the most stalwart of shoppers.

Retailers have long paid special attention to advertising their holiday wares, as seen in this 1890 flyer. Islesboro merchant J. P. Bragg, with the help of a smiling, fur-covered Santa atop a chimney, “wishes to inform his friends and customers that he has now in store a full line of goods available for CHRISTMAS PRESENTS.” These range from dry and fancy goods, to Majolica Ware, games and toys, boots and shoes, vases and lamps, and even “fancy box paper” to dress up packages. Interested parties are invited to “please call and see the goods. No trouble if you don’t intend to buy.”

Our Museum Store welcomes you enthusiastically this holiday season–and you don’t need to call ahead. Visit us Monday through Saturday, 10am-5pm, and Sunday, 12-5pm, or online anytime.

Celebrate the Season!

We know things get busy this time of year. But here’s hoping you’ll save a little room in your calendar for some of the many special events and activities Maine Historical Society has in store starting November 23.

Visit the Longfellow House and hear first hand how the Longfellow Family celebrated the Christmas holiday. Listen to the newly-restored 1843 Chickering piano played in the parlor during Saturday afternoon tours, and enjoy Indoor Amusements, a micro-exhibit in the house featuring a selection of toys and games from the 1850s to the 1990s.

Purchase holiday merchandise at the shop set up in the Longfellow House, buy gifts on line, or purchase photographic reproductions on VintageMaineImages.com ($5 off all 8″ x 10″ prints).

For all the details, visit our programs page. And Happy Holidays from all of us at MHS!

Holiday Shopping Extravaganza

Our cozy little museum store (already chock full to the rafters) becomes a bit larger this time of year. Since Black Friday, the annual Holiday Bazaar has been set up in the lecture hall. Shoppers can browse tables full of unique seasonal gifts while listening to festive holiday carols: Monday-Saturday from 10AM-5PM and Sundays from Noon-5PM right through Christmas Eve.

Have a look at some of the great finds our consummate store manager, Melissa Spoerl, has unearthed this year.
