The Schooner “Emerald”

Entries from "Emerald" Log Book, 1859

This log book provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily activities of the schooner Emerald, which sailed out of Biddeford. Among other things, it records the number and types of fish caught by each crew member, and sightings of whales, sharks, and other vessels.

The cod fishing industry is one of the topics explored in the upcoming MHS book discussion group, Extraordinary Histories of Ordinary Things. Other topics include the evolution of artificial light, the toothpick, and the influence of rum on the development of the New World. The deadline for registering is January 27.
