Away at School–Letters Home

Student Group Portrait, Fryeburg, ca. 1906. Contributed by Fryeburg Academy Archives.

Maine Memory Network includes an extensive collection of historical letters that explore a wide variety of topics and places. The record for each handwritten letter includes a scan of the original presented alongside a line-by-line transcription.

Letters form the basis of a number of rich Maine Memory exhibits. The letters in the Away at School–Letters Home exhibit, mostly from the 19th century, were written by students who were studying away from home and describe all aspects of school life, including their boarding arrangements, the curriculum, and their teachers and classmates.
