About 200 people turned out on Saturday for our blast-from-the-past Reunion Show honoring Maine TV pioneer Dave Astor at Port City Music Hall. Here are some fun photos from the event. (That’s Portland-area musician Tony Boffa and Schooner Fare member Steve Romanoff sitting to Dave’s right and left, respectively, on the stage.)
It was a moving tribute to a man who obviously made a huge impression on many young men and women during the run of The Dave Astor Show (For Teenagers Only) that aired on WCSH-TV from 1956-1971. At 91, Dave not only retains crystal-clear memories of countless rehearsals and episodes, but displays a delightful and deadpan wit.
Many of those former teenagers who danced and sang on the show–now graying Baby Boomers–spoke lovingly of Dave, in many cases as a father figure who instilled discipline, self-respect, and confidence. Several credited the show for beginning their careers in show business or the arts.
For many more details on the event, see the fantastic write-up in the Press Herald or the Kennebec Journal. And if you’re interested in more on Dave Astor, keep in touch. We’re going to be showing the only surviving episode of the show every Saturday this summer (starting in July) at 2PM–just come on in. Over the summer, we’ll also begin putting many of the hundreds of photos from the show on Maine Memory Network.
